Subject Overview:

With a working understanding of the fundamentals of combining acting, singing and dance for music theatre performance, MTCC 4 begins to focus on preparation for professional auditions and the development of a role. Work may include classes on audition technique, mock auditions and extension work on repertoire to explore storytelling and character through the rehearsal and performance of show segments. On completion of this subject students will have a clear understanding of the form and standard expected at professional Music Theatre auditions, the extent and range of prepared repertoire of both songs and monologues they should have, as well as the preparation and application required for dance calls. As with all year 3 subjects, a high level of preparation and autonomy is expected, with students exhibiting strong organisational skills and confident application of technical and artistic principles in self-directed work.

Learning Outcomes:

• Develop understanding of the requirements and form of Music Theatre auditions
• Develop skills in audition technique for song, text and dance auditions.
• Develop understanding of professional etiquette, presentation of self and materials for professional auditions.
• Develop skills in collaborative work with directors, musical directors, choreographers and fellow performers.

Assessment:

Class work evaluation: audition preparation. Week 6. 20%
Class work evaluation: project rehearsals. Week 15. 20%

Focusing on achievements against set criteria in areas such as: engagement, developing a methodology, transference of skills into performance, professional attitude and commitment, ability to discuss & give/receive feedback

Formal Performance1: 2 contrasting songs (5 minutes). Week 6. 20%

Formal Performance 2: repertoire segments (20 minutes). Week 15. 30%

Written: self-assessment of progress based on a journal of classroom and rehearsal experiences, self-directed study and progress towards personal artistic objectives. 500 words equivalent. Week 15. 10%
