Stage Management Techniques 1

This subject will be delivered via 3 modules. - Module One: Stage Management Skills; Module Two: Audio Skills; Module: Three: Lighting Skills

Students will be taught the basic skills and techniques required for the role of a stage manager. This includes an understanding of basic technical equipment as well as a sound knowledge of the stage management role and necessary documentation and communication skills required.
Module One:
Students will be taught the sequential process of the SM role in creating a performance.
Students build a prompt copy from a supplied script. They will learn about and create the necessary documentation and communication skills a stage manager uses in their role.
Module Two:
This module will introduce the student to Audio in Performance. Students will be introduced to Audio equipment types and difference, safe use of audio equipment, how to operate and maintain audio equipment, and the audio system (power and signal distribution to control equipment).
Module Three:
Module 3 will introduce the student to Lighting in Performance. Students will be introduced to the historical context of lighting, equipment types and difference, safe use of lighting equipment, how to operate and maintain lighting equipment, and the lighting system (power distribution to control equipment).

Module One:
On completing this module students will be able to:
• understand the communication requirements of the stage management role;
• develop the necessary communication skills (written and oral) for stage management practice;
• understand where the stage management role sits within the production process.
Module Two:
On completing this module students will be able to:
• install a basic audio system;
• recognize different audio equipment;
• operate audio equipment safely.
Module Three:
On completing this module students will be able to:
• design a basic lighting system;
• install a basic lighting system;
• recognise different lighting equipment;
• operate lighting equipment safely.

Module One: 50%
Submission of prompt copy with all required documentation (2,000 words or equivalent)
Due at the end of semester with ongoing assessment of documentation through the semester.

Module Two: 20%
Installation and control of a basic audio system. (1,000 words or equivalent) Due at the mid semester.

Module Three: 20%
The design, installation and control of a basic lighting system. Due at mid Semester.

Participation (For all Modules) 10%
Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. All assignment work must be submitted to be eligible for a pass in this subject.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

On completing this subject students will be able to:
• demonstrate practical skills in respect of critical analysis, problem solving, report writing, team work and oral and written communication;
• work at various levels, both as an individual and as a team member, in a wide variety of visual/performing artistic environments;
• exhibit extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of their discipline including relevant professional knowledge, skills, discipline and ethics as they relate to a practising visual/performing artist;
• demonstrate an open, independent and inquiring attitude towards contemporary cultural developments and new ideas.
