Sociology Internship

This subject is not offered in 2014.

Total of 240 hours

Completion of 25 points of Level 1 Sociology, and 37.5 points of Level 2 Sociology (including MULT20003), and 37.5 points of Level 3 Sociology (including SOCI30001).

SOCI30001 and the Internship can be taken concurrently.

Sociology at Levels 1 & 2

In this subject a student, under academic supervision, undertakes a sociological research project in an organisation outside the university, such as a trade union, social movement, women's organisation, social service provider, government or non-government organisation or business organisation. The project will be determined jointly by the student and the organisation concerned.

On completion of this subject students should:

• be able to design, carry out and produce a report or portfolio of a sociological research project in a public sector or non-governmental organisation, integrating a range of sociological methods;
• be able to demonstrate an ability to successfully negotiate and work with stakeholders in the design, implementation and reporting of a sociological research project;
• be able to integrate issues of research ethics into an undergraduate research project.

A Research Report or professional portfolio of 6,000 words (80%), and a Reflective Essay of 2,000 words (20%). Both pieces of assessment are due during the examination period.

Hurdle Requirement: Mid-semester progress report and a supervisor assessment report.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per working day. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

On completion of this subject students should:

• be able to research through the competent use of the library and other information sources, and be able to define areas of inquiry and methods of research in the preparation of research reports;
• be able to conceptualise theoretical problems, form judgements and arguments and communicate critically, creatively and theoretically through report writing, workplace discussion and presentations;
• be able to communicate knowledge intelligibly and economically through report writing and workplace discussion;
• be able to manage and organise workloads for recommended reading and the completion of work assignments and assessment;
• be able to participate in team work through involvement in internship placements.

Entry to this subject is by application as a quota of 16 students applies. Applications are made online through the School of Social and Political Sciences in the semester prior to the one in which the internship is to occur.

The Sociology Internship is not available as a Breadth subject and is only available to students who are completing a major in Sociology.
