Recital 2 undertaken over one semester for full time candidatures and two semesters for part time candidates.

For Instrumental/Vocal Students:

To prepare for performance a solo recital program. Programs are to be of standard concert length (normally between 70 and 75 minutes plus an interval of not more than 10 minutes) and include major works from the relevant vocal or instrumental recital repertory. The proposed program, including the names of any associate artists, is to be submitted for approval by week 6 of the relevant semester. For Conducting Students:

To prepare an approved ensemble (as determined in consultation with Senior Academic Staff, the Supervisor and Student) for a concert performance. Programs are to be of standard concert length (normally between 70 and 75 minutes plus an interval of not more than 10 minutes) and include works that demonstrate a diversity of conducting skills. The proposed program, including the names of associate artists, is to be submitted for approval by week 6 of the relevant semester. For Instrumental/Vocal students:

During this subject, students can expect to broaden their experience and understanding of musical performance and extend their musical repertory.

For Conducting students:

During this subject, students can expect to develop their conducting, score-reading and aural skills and extend their musical repertory.

A public performance of the works studied to the satisfaction of the examiners. Students are to write their own program notes to be assessed as part of, and together with, the performance. A draft of the Program Notes must be submitted by the end of Week 8 on the Master of Music (Music Performance) Recital Program Approval form. Recital examinations are scheduled during the day time at the conclusion of each semester.

Hurdle Requirement

Students are required to meet both the attendance and participation requirements for Postgraduate Seminar and for Performance Class in order to pass Recital 2.

Postgraduate Seminar Requirements

Each student must make a seminar presentation, to the satisfaction of the examiners, of at least one paper related to their field of study. The presentation should be 40 minutes in length followed by 20 minutes of discussion led by the student. Students are required to attend a minimum of 27 seminars over the course of three semesters of candidature.

Performance Class Requirements

Instrumental students: Candidates must perform at least four times per semester in the Performance Class, and must attend a minimum of 27 Performance Classes during the period of their candidature. Candidates will be graded on their performances in the class by the subject coordinator.

Conducting students: Candidates will be graded on their performance as determined by the subject coordinator, and must attend a minimum of 27 Performance/Conducting classes during the period of their candidature.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

• Demonstrate an expanded knowledge of repertory and style in their area of instrumental or vocal specialization;
• Demonstrate a professional level of skills and team-work related to a career in music performance, including concert etiquette, planning a coherent recital program, writing meaningful and original program notes, and negotiating with professional colleagues to bring a professional performance to successful fruition;
• Apply the best practices of local, national and international standards in their professional career in music performance;
• Pursue an informed program of independent further study in music performance
• Provide leadership in the profession of music performance
• Use current technologies and assimilate the potential of emerging technologies to facilitate and heighten the dissemination of skills, knowledge and information; and
• Demonstrate developed instrumental or vocal skills to the level expected for entry into the performance profession.
