Time Commitment: Contact Hours: One 2-hour rehearsal each week during semester and intensive rehearsal periods prior to concerts.
Total Time Commitment:

60 hours.

Prerequisites:

The minimum level of performance required for this ensemble would be equivalent to AMEB grade 8 or a very high grade for VCE solo performance.

An audition may be required.

Subject Overview:

The Symphony Orchestra plays an extremely important role in the performance activities of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Students selected to play in the Orchestra gain invaluable experience through performance of works from the symphonic, choral and concerto repertoires under the guidance of guest conductors who appear with the orchestra each year.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • show technical development as ensemble musicians
  • participate with ability and self-confidence as a team member of a performing group
  • perform selected repertoire to concert standard
  • identify and exhibit specific knowledge of a range of ensemble repertoire
  • exhibit an informed respect for the values and principles of ensemble performance.
Assessment:

This subject is assessed on a pass/fail basis.

Weekly preparation of parts, individual and/or sectional practice and active contribution to all rehearsals and performances as directed (100%)

Hurdle requirement: 100% weekly punctual and full attendance at all rehearsals and performances as directed is expected. Less than 80% attendance will result in a fail.
