This seminar will look at basic questions about pictorial representation from a philosophical standpoint. For example: What is a picture? How do pictures differ from other kinds of visual or nonvisual representation? What do we ‘see’ when we see a picture? What kinds of content do pictures have? And are sketches or paintings ‘pictures’ in the same sense as photographs? Focusing on recent philosophical debate, we will assess the role of factors such as resemblance, convention and recognition in answering these questions.

This subject will be of particular interest to students with research interests in philosophy, visual arts and art history.

To provide advanced intensive instruction in a topic or area of scholarship in the humanities, social sciences or creative arts. A student who completes this subject should have:

• enhanced knowledge of the topic or area of scholarship taught in the module;
• an ability to reflect upon their own research work in relation to the content of the module;
• enhanced engagement with leading-edge research in Arts today.

• one 500-word essay proposal. Due during the teaching period (20%)
• one 2000-word essay. Due within four weeks of completion of teaching (80%)
