JAPN10002 Japanese 2 or equivalent.

Students who have sucessfully completed Japanese 5, 6, 7, 8, Japanese Grammar in Action, Reading Japanese Literature, Variation in Japanese Language and Japanese through the Media are not eligible to enrol. Se subject notes below.

Subject Overview:

This subject aims to supplement core Japanese language subjects with key analytical tools and strategies. They should enable students to engage in interactions in Japanese effectively in achieving intended social and communicative goals. Students will be introduced to Japanese sound systems, key characteristics of conversational patters, and socio-culturally rigid as well as negotiable aspects of the language.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject students will:

  • be able to understand fluid and negotiable nature of interactions and to use some of the key features strategically in conversations in order to achieve particular communicative and social goals.
  • be able to have a greater sensitivity in choice making in conversations.
  • be able to analyse Japanese conversational dialogues with the knowledge of aisatsu and other conversational routines, politeness, and ellipses.
  • be able to conduct everyday conversations and manage classroom communication in Japanese with greater socio-cultural awareness.
  • be able to reflect on their first language and culture from intercultural perspectives.
Assessment:

Written/oral work totaling 2500 words 60% (due throughout the semester) and a 2-hour final examination 40% (due during the examination period).

Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
