Subject Overview:

Clinical simulation involves a range of immersive techniques that replace or amplify real clinical experiences with interactive, guided ones to achieve enhanced educational outcomes with safety for both patient and learner. This subject examines the educational underpinnings of effective clinical simulation. It includes an interactive visit to a clinical simulation facility.

Learning Outcomes:

By completing this subject, participants should be able to:

  • understand the underlying principles of effective clinical simulation
  • describe the range of clinical simulation techniques and the appropriateness of low/high technology and low/high fidelity simulations for different clinical situations
  • design a clinical simulation scenario using a range of resources
  • conduct an effective debriefing and feedback discussion with learners following a simulated experience
  • understand the role of clinical simulation in promoting effective interprofessional teamwork
Assessment:
  • Individually design and conduct a 15 minute simulated clinical encounter (1500 word equivalent) - 60%
  • Written assignment reflecting on the experience of conducting a simulation (1000 words) - 40%
