Subject Overview:

This subject extends the student's understanding of English in use in a range of different contexts, thus extending their English language capabilities. Topics include language and social context, differences between written and spoken English, the language of specific fields, analysing text structures and communication and medium.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • understand how context shapes language and adapt their use of English to particular contexts;
  • understand the linguistic variables in language register with a view to shaping their own language appropriately;
  • analyse the language of specific fields; and
  • analyse text structures with a view to using appropriate structures in their own writing;
  • be able to identify the linguistic variables in language and register.
Assessment:

Oral Presentation: 1250 words equivalent, due mid semester 25%
Journal Articles: 1250 words, due late semester 25%
Report on Language Use in Specific Fields: 2500 words, due wnd semester 50%
