This subject is available to students from any disciplinary background and each brings a particular contribution. It is desirable that students complete ABPL90064 Planning Urban Sustainability before undertaking this subject (or alternatively take both subjects concurrently).

Subject Overview:

The subject covers the essential science needed to understand urban environmental aspects of climate change, describes environmental policy and governance from the global to the Australian, State and local levels, and then provides case studies of environmental planning issues and responses. Case studies will be both Australian and international.

Learning Outcomes:

• Understand the scientific backdrop to climate change
• Understand environmental policy relevant to cities and urban change
• Familiarity with urban environmental planning initiatives
• Be able to contribute to urban environmental planning policies and plans

Assessment:

Student group presentation, week 8, 1500 words (or equivalent), 30%.

Student essay, two weeks after the last class, 3500 (or equivalent), 70%.
