Course Overview:

This course is no longer offered. The Master of Philosophy (M Phil) is recommended as a suitable alternative course.

The Master of Architecture (by Design) is intended for people who are already qualified in architecture and who wish to pursue research in the field using design as a tool through which to explore a particular research problem.
Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the degree the candidate will be able to:

  • demonstrate a critical understanding and mastery of architectural and design theories
  • demonstrate independent research methodologies at an advanced level
  • develop and express their own design position in an effective and lucid manner
  • exhibit an advanced understanding of the philosophical and ideological discourses underpinning design theories.
Course Structure & Available Subjects: Candidates undertake a coursework component for one semester in conjunction with the MArch (by coursework). However, any coursework undertaken may be equivalent to no more than one-third of the total assessment weight of the Masters degree. The remaining period of candidature will be devoted to the production of the major portfolio and dissertation.
Entry Requirements: Applicants are required to have a five-year undergraduate or higher degree in architecture with a minimum average of H2B(70%) in their final year. Applicants should also have at least one years practical experience and as an architect. Applicants are required to submit a folio of recent work.

  • a series of design exercises and written papers based on studio workshops
  • a major portfolio (two substantial design projects)
  • a major dissertation of up to 15,000 words outlining the candidates theoretical design position demonstrated in the major portfolio
