Professional Practice 2 (Hospital)

This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2013:

Estimated total time commitment 410 hours (minimum).

Prospective students are advised to familiarise themselves with the Faculty's Academic Requirements Statement.

Lectures will consider law and ethics (legal responsibilities); accreditation; industrial relations; insurance and professional indemnity; communication with clients and colleagues; referrals and use of specialists; business systems and practice management; management of personnel; quality assurance; and HACCP

Extramural work between teaching periods and between clinical years consists of twelve weeks of approved extramural work with an academic associate of the faculty, or other approved experience during the third and final years; and one week of dairy practice at one of the faculty-approved rural locations.

Clinical rotations (60%), a 1-hour multiple-choice examination (30%) and one 15-minute oral examination (10%).

The marks for clinical rotations will be weighted equally between the rotations. Students are required to pass all components of assessment, including all clinical rotations.

Satisfactory attendance at clinical rotations is a hurdle requirement for this subject.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

Students completing this subject should have acquired the following:

• cognitive, analytic and problem solving skills, involving independent thought, rational enquiry and self-directed learning;

• professional and technical skills;

• writing skills and the use of advanced communication technologies;

• time management and planning skills;

• community and leadership skills including facility in public speaking and presentation;

• people management, the ability to participate effectively in collaborative learning, interpersonal relationships and grief counselling; and

• basic finance and business management skills.

Special requirements: suitable protective clothing is required for all practical work in the clinics and laboratories. A scrub suit is required for surgical clinics, a clean white coat for medical clinics, and grey or khaki coveralls and rubber over-boots for all large animal clinics. Students must provide themselves with a stethoscope, thermometer, pen light and dog lead.
