The aim of this subject is to enhance the theoretical and skill base of advanced psychosocial practice . The content focuses on the strategies laid down by the Better Access initiative through the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).
Intervention strategies taught will include the following:
1. Psycho-education (including motivational interviewing)
2. Cognitive-behavioural Therapy including:
• Behavioural interventions (Behaviour modification; Exposure techniques; Activity scheduling)
• Cognitive interventions (Cognitive therapy)
3. Relaxation strategies (Progressive muscle relaxation; Controlled breathing)
4. Skills training (Problem solving skills and training; Anger management; Social skills training; Communication training; Stress management; Parent management training)
5. Interpersonal Therapy (especially for depression)

At the completion of this subject students should be able to:
• Gain an extended theoretical understanding of and skills in advanced psychosocial interventions.

A written assignment totalling 5000 words (100%) - due at the end of semester.

On completion of this subject students should be able to:
• critically analyse and integrate the core elements of key theoretical models of advanced psychosocial practice;
• think creatively about their practice with clients in the health and mental health field in relation to advanced models of psychosocial intervention.
