Subject Overview:

A series of weekly seminars normally divided into two segments of one hour each. In some weeks the seminar is split into separate Musicology/Ethnomusicology and Performance groups; other weeks the seminar is jointly run.

General seminar format:

  • Presentation of papers by students.

  • Special topics on research methodology, music performance practice, and current issues in music research and related areas led by various members of the academic staff or visiting lecturers.
Objectives:

On completion of the subject, students should have gained experience in the preparation and presentation of research papers and a wider perspective of research and associated issues in musicology and performance.

Assessment:

Each student must present, to the satisfaction of the examiners, at least one paper related to their field of study. For Composition and Musicology/Ethnomusicology candidates, the presentation should be 40 minutes in length followed by 20 minutes of discussion led by the student. Performance students should present a project of equivalent length.

Students are required to attend a minimum of 27 seminars over the course of three semesters of candidature.

Assessment is on a Pass-Fail basis.
