Subject Overview:

A survey of the principal methods of musical analysis used in Western music with their historical development. Critical evaluation of these analytical procedures and techniques through practical application.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to communicate knowledge of the principal methods of musical analysis used in Western music, and apply linear analysis to the preparation and performance of advanced scores relevant to the student's instrument and repertoire specialisations.

Assessment:

Regular exercises in advanced analysis (40%); a 20-minute demonstration session on set scores (40%); written evaluation of analytical techniques (20%). Assessment is on a Pass/Fail basis.
