Subject Overview:

Classes will focus on music theatre voice usage and the development of technique, including breath support, pitch, range and tone through an exploration of large and small ensemble music theatre songs. Later in the semester song character and storytelling will be addressed through an intensive block of combined singing and acting classes focusing on large ensemble singing, where individual creative licence will be balanced against the need to blend musically and support the story.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this subject students will:
• exhibit a developing understanding of the vocal technical requirements of a specific range of music theatre voice sounds;
• display development in the ability to musically harmonise, phrase and blend within the given context of story, character and musical style.

Assessment:

Continuous: preparation and participation in classes, demonstrating continuous application (60%)
Formal: based on the singing component of a set task in the final Singing & Acting combined class in week10 (30%)
Written: Written: self-assessment based on a journal of classroom experiences and self-directed study 250 words, due week 10 (10%)
