Total Time Commitment: 125 hours self directed learning in the workplace and the wider community. Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.

Subject Overview: The aim of this subject is to develop an understanding of management, leadership and change in youth health, education or welfare organisations. This subject will include a critical analysis of organisational structures and decision making processes in relation to working with other organisations. Strategies to maximise an organisation's capacity to work in effective cross-sectoral practice will be explored. This subject will introduce students to principles and practice of organisational, community and systems change as it relates to youth-focused services, programs and policies. The subject will also develop students' capacity to lead and manage cross-sectoral projects and create a "learning organisation" culture.

Assessment: One 2,000 word assignment due mid-semester worth 40% and one 3,000 word assignment due at the end of semester worth 60%

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate leadership capacity including an ability to engage in public discourses;
  • Demonstrate capacity in change management processes; and
  • Demonstrate highly developed written communication skills.

On completion of this subject students will be able to:

  • Assess theories and processes for organisational and community change and capacity building;
  • Apply principles of organisational learning to their own workplace;
  • Lead and manage change processes for cross-sectoral youth services, programs, policy development and implementation;
  • Systematically evaluate and integrate evidence and propose solutions for change;
  • Identify processes for strengthening cross-sectoral youth professional networks in communities; and
  • Define frameworks for systems change and accountability.
