Course Overview:

This distance program will be offered to practicing medical professionals who wish to obtain further expertise in medical ultrasound for clinical practice. It is part of the nested program of courses related to the use of clinical Ultrasound. It also includes the Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Ultrasound (which will be a pre-requisites). The course is designed to provide the knowledge-base necessary for diagnostic-level performance of echocardiography and interpretation; surface ultrasound uses such as ultrasound guided procedures and nerve blocks; and other medical specialist specific ultrasound applications such as vascular ultrasound examination. The aim is to provide advanced knowledge to specialist craft groups to facilitate use of ultrasound relevant to their specialty.

Objectives:

At the end of this course is a student will have:
1. To provide the knowledge base to become competent at an advanced level of echocardiography
2. To provide the knowledge base to become competent in the additional imaging techniques and modalities

Course Structure & Available Subjects:

To satisfy the requirements of the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound students must successfully complete all four subjects, a total of 50 points.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must possess undergraduate qualifications sufficient to practice as a medical practitioner, such as MBBS or equivalent degrees, as a minimum entry requirement.

Graduate Attributes:

The Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound selects students who have extensive prior knowledge of medicine, and the pathophysiology and treatment options relevant to the use of medical ultrasound. Following completion of the course, the graduates will have a diagnostic-level understanding for echocardiography including transoesophageal echocardiography. They will have acquired additional knowledge within their discipline, and will be familiar with methods of applying ultrasound related knowledge in their clinical practice. There will be a high consistency of knowledge between students within each craft group or discipline. Interactive tutorials and case reviews will allow students to articulate their knowledge and test the capability for independent critical thought. By the end of the course, there will be testing of interpretation and problem-solving skills.
