Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 2 x 1 hour lectures per week and 1 x 1 hour tutorial. There will be no tutorials in the first or last weeks of semester.
Total Time Commitment:

3 contact hours/week, 5 additional hours/week. Total of 8 hours per week.

Subject Overview:

This subject is an introduction to descriptive and theoretical approaches to the analysis of sound systems across languages. and different approaches to phonology, training in formal phonological analysis, and the development of phonological theory until the present.

Objectives:
  • be able to appreciate the universal and typological features of sound systems.
  • have developed skill in practical analysis and description of a wide range of phonological phenomena from a variety of languages.
  • understand and be able to apply the basic concepts and methods of phonological analysis and description.
Assessment:

Two assignments totalling 2500 words 65% (due at regular intervals during the semester), and a problem-based 2-hour exam 35% (held in the examination period).

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

  • Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
  • All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
