Subject Overview:

This subject covers a range of topics, such as Francophonie, Francophone cultures and identities. On completion of this subject, students should be able to understand and appreciate the historical facts, the opposing ideologies involved in the making and consolidating of Francophone cultures, as well as the complexity of Francophone societies. identify and analyse the specificity of Francophone cultures as well as the influence of French culture in the works of French-speaking authors from regions previously protected or colonised by France.

Objectives:
  • Understand and appreciate the historical facts, the opposing ideologies involved in the making and consolidating of francophone cultures, as well as the complexity of francophone societies.
  • Identify and analyse the specificity of francophone cultures as well as the influence of French culture in the works of French-speaking authors from regions previously protected or colonised by France.
  • Present an informed and coherent point of view in discussing and explaining facts and concepts.
Assessment:

A 20 minute seminar paper subsequently written up and totaling 1,500 words 30%, one 2000 word essay 40%, regular written assignments equivalent to 1,500 words 30%.

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

  • Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
  • All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
