This subject is an introduction to a range of poetic forms. Students will read poetry from various periods and cultures, with an emphasis on 20th century and contemporary poetry.

On completion of the subject students should have:

• demonstrated a broad reading of poetry encompassing various forms and periods;
• drafted and developed poems from a variety of approaches and forms;
• an understanding of poetic conventions;
• discussed works of contemporary poetry in their historical and cultural context.

12 to 15 poems or 100-150 lines of poetry 65% (six poems due mid-semester, remainder due at the end of the semester), an 800 word review of one book of poetry 15% (due at the end of the semester), attendance at a poetry reading and 500 word report on the reading 10% (due at the end of semester). Regular attendance and participation through a verbal presentation of a book review and submission of work in progress for workshopping 10% (during the semester). This subject has a minimum hurdle requirement of 75% attendance and regular participation in tutorials. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Students who successfully complete this subject will be able to:

This subject is available to Bachelor of Arts (Continuing) and Bachelor of Creative Arts students and may be credited towards a major in Creative Writing in either course. Students who have completed 760-205 Poetry are not eligible to enrol in this subject.
