Subject Overview:

This subject introduces students to the speech pathology clinical setting including the management of patient presenting for diagnosis and/or treatment. The clinical settings may include hospitals, community clinics, schools, private practices, university clinics, nursing homes and others. A variety of clinical experiences will be offered including observations and hands on experience with infants, children young people and adults throughout the life span. In particular, this subject will cover establishing rapport with clients, interview and history taking, listening and recording information accurately and developing observational skills.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should demonstrate an understanding of the speech pathology clinical setting and demonstrate they have acquired the following competency based clinical skills:

  • history taking and clinical examination skills
  • the ability to listen and record accurate written information
  • the ability to discuss relevant variables that are affecting the child, patient, family
Assessment:

This subject is assessed as Pass/Fail. Students must pass all components of assessment to pass the subject.

• Assessment by Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) at the end of Semester 2.

• Assessment of clinical performance via the Competency Assessment in Speech Pathology (COMPASS®) and the completion of a Clinical Portfolio. The COMPASS® Assessment and the Clinical Portfolio are submitted one week after the final day of the clinical placement.

Hurdle requirements:
• Students must pass the OSCE and COMPASS® assessments in order to pass this subject.
• 100% attendance and participation at all clinical placements.
• Submission of the completed Clinical Portfolio
