This subject is a quota subject and places are limited. Students may provisionally enroll via the Student Portal, but places are not guaranteed until selection is completed. You will be notified in writing by the Student Centre if you are selected.

Students may be expected to attend pre-trip and post-trip seminars.

Admission to a degree in the Melbourne School of Design.

Students should preferably come from a design background and be familiar with drawing or other modes of representation.

This studio will focus on adapting a selected coastal settlement in Malaga, Spain (Nueva Torrequebrada), to the predicted impacts of climate change and helping mitigate the causes through reducing greenhouse gas emissions - e.g. through the integration of technology for generating alternative, carbon free energy into the town’s urban fabric. Like many settlements along the Malaga coast, Nueva Torrequebrada has been heavily impacted by tourism and associated development in the past, making it particularly vulnerable to climate change and associated threats of increased frequency and intensity of storm events, rising sea levels and drought. The settlement also has some unique problems associated with water supply, loss of indigenous flora and fauna and degradation of the town’s unique character, which has been a consequence of poor planning in the past. The overall aim of this studio, therefore, is to generate design proposals that will not only make Nueva Torrequebrada more resilient place, and better adapted to confront the predicted impacts of climate change, but also a more sustainable and better place to live and holiday.

• To provide students with an experience in international collaboration.
• To encourage students to identify and engage critically with specific cultural practices, industrial contexts and socio-technical traditions.
• To stimulate systematic/creative thinking and problem solving within students through their experiences of how local issues govern planning, design and construction processes in a particular location.

• Presentation of research relating to design concepts for site, 20%, due mid semester (equivalent 2,000).

• Group presentation of preliminary site analysis and initial design concepts, 30%, due week 9 (equivalent 3000 words).

• Finalised design work prepared for publication and exhibition, 50% due end of semester (equivalent 5000 words).
