Objectives:

Students who complete the Postgraduate Diploma should:

  • complete the equivalent of a four year BA (Honours) degree with a research component and obtain a recognised qualification;
  • gain an adequate basis for pursuing advanced studies in linguistics and applied linguistics at Masters or PhD level;
  • demonstrate a specialist understanding of specific areas of study, showing an understanding of the latest research directions;
  • develop a capacity for an advanced level of analysis in relation to the specific issues in linguistics and applied linguistics.
Structure & Available Subjects:

The Postgraduate Diploma in Arts in this area of specialisation requires:

  • Thesis subject (50 points)
  • one compulsory subject (12.5 points)
  • elective subjects (37.5 points)

Elective Subjects

Note: Postgraduate Diploma students may also take the following subjects for 25 points by enrolling in Directed Reading Project for the remaining 12.5 points:

  • Seminars in Theoretical Lunguistics
  • Structure of Aboriginal Languages
  • Seminars in Descriptive Linguistics
  • Discourse Analysis & Representation
  • Experimental Phonetics

Note: Postgraduate Diploma students may only enrol in one of the following subjects for the Honours degree and these subjects are not available in online mode for Postgraduate Diploma students:

  • Quantitative Methods in Language Studies
  • Second Language Acquisition
  • English in a Globalised World
  • Bilingualism

Note: Students must obtain written permission from the subject coordiantor to enrol in LING40001 Directed Reading Project
