Sexual Health

The Sexual Health stream in the MPH focuses on the important recognition and understanding of how sexual health impacts on the public health of communities. In developed countries recent changes in the epidemiology of many STIs and changing sexual behaviour patterns have focused attention deservedly on improving access to services and the protection and empowerment of those most vulnerable in society. In addition many other social, cultural and economic influences are acknowledged as important considerations in the study and practice of sexual health. This sexual health specialisation enables students to familiarise themselves with the important public health implications of sexual health and to develop an advanced knowledge of the literature in a related area of interest. Students may have a clinical or non-clinical interest and professional background. Whilst sexual health priorities may differ between resource poor and resource rich settings, the core public health concepts and implications are similar and so the sexual health stream is of interest and relevance to both local and international students. Students with a specialised sexual health qualification in public health will find this relevant to work in a wide variety of areas including clinical sexual health services, policy and government related areas and international health.

Standard 200 Point Program (no Advanced Standing):
SIX core subjects and TEN elective subjects (Full Coursework program) OR
SIX core subjects, EIGHT elective subjects and either a Research Project or Professional Practice unit

Students granted 25 Credit Points Advanced Standing:
SIX core subjects and EIGHT elective subjects OR
SIX core subjects, SIX elective subjects and either a Research Project or Professional Practice unit

Students granted 50 Credit Points Advanced Standing:
FIVE core subjects and SEVEN elective subjects OR
FIVE core subjects and FIVE elective subjects and either a Research Project or Professional Practice unit

Student must complete POPH90217 unless they have been granted 50 points Advanced Standing (150 point program) or an exemption has been granted.

Highly Recommended Electives

Students cannot enrol in both POPH90069 and POPH90070. They must choose to enrol in only one of these.

Students may apply to enrol in a Research Project in Sexual Health.

Those students who do undertake (or are currently enrolled in) the Research Project please note the following important information:

Students who have already completed one semester of their Research Project will be completing their project over two semester’s (12.5 points per semester) so please enroll in the remaining semester.
Students who have not commenced their Research Project have the option of applying to enrol in a year-long research project or a semester-long research project.
