Economics Major

This major can be taken by students enrolled in the pre-2008 Bachelor of Arts - please refer to the course overview for details.

Economics has been taught at the University of Melbourne since 1885 when one of the University's first four professors, W E Hearn, was appointed to teach political economy as a component of the Bachelor of Arts degree. A separate Faculty of Commerce was established in 1924. In 1944 it was renamed the Faculty of Business and Economics.

To complete an economics major in the BA, a student must meet the mathematics prerequisite of a score of at least 25 in VCE Mathematical Methods, or equivalent.

First year subjects

Introductory Microeconomics must be taken prior to Introductory Macroeconomics.

Second year

Students are advised to note the prerequisites for third-year subjects before making a decision on their second-year subjects.

In addition to satisfying the individual subject prerequisites, students must have completed or gained credit for at least 75 level-1 points before they will be permitted to enrol in any of the level-2 (second year) subjects listed below.

Third year

In addition to satisfying the individual subject prerequisites, students must have completed or gained credit for at least 175 level-1 and level-2 points before they will be permitted to enrol in any of the level-3 (third year) subjects listed below.
