Subject Overview:

This subject is intended for social workers who have experience in working with groups, and/or are practitioners who intend establishing a group for service users in their agency. Thus, the subject presumes some understanding of the basics of social work practice with groups and is focused upon developing understanding of the theory and practice relevant to this approach to working with people. Students may be working with groups in providing therapeutic interventions, social support, as a community development or social action strategy, or as assisting self-help groups in health, mental health, individual and family settings, and/or in non-voluntary or mandated programs.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students will be expected to have:

  • Built on and increased their knowledge and skills in aspects of practice with groups
  • Explored the research literature on work with groups in relation to the evidence base for group work intervention in a selected area
  • Demonstrated their understanding of the challenges and issues involved in evaluating and/or researching their own group work practice
Assessment:
  1. A written assessment of 2,000 words (40%) due mid-semester
  2. A written assessment of 3,000 words (60%) due end of semester
