This subject is a study of avant-garde and art house film and film movements outside Hollywood. Based on a detailed study of one or more avant-garde or art house film movements, this subject investigates the relationship between filmmakers and the central currents and theories of modern and post-modern art. Key issues of auteurism, national cinemas, industry and social and political history will be also be considered. |

Students who complete this subject should gain a thorough understanding of:

Assessment: | A class presentation of 500 words (10%); a paper of 1000 words 40% (due during semester); a written essay of 2500 words 50% (due at the end of semester). This subject has a minimum hurdle requirement of 75% attendance and regular participation in tutorials. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject. |
