Corequisites: 513-649 Musculoskeletal & Sports Physiotherapy B
Recommended Background Knowledge: Undergraduate degree in Physiotherapy together with clinical experience in either musculoskeletal physiotherapy or sports physiotherapy.

Subject Overview: This subject is directed at post graduate students in the field of musculoskeletal or sports physiotherapy. It allows the theoretical concepts and practical skills learned in 513-648 Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy A and 513-649 Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy B, and clinical skills learned in 513-634 Advanced Clinical Practice 2A to be applied in the clinical or sports medicine settings. It aims to create an opportunity for students to refine in examination, differential diagnosis, patient/athlete education and management, including implementation of appropriate treatment regimes, exercise prescription and provision of patient/athlete education and advice as necessary.
Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students will have had the opportunity to further the knowledge and skills acquired in Advanced Clinical Practice 2A and to develop:

  • Advanced verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Advanced ability to perform an appropriate and flexible subjective and physical examination with complex patients using a range of domains
  • Enhanced analytical skills to evaluate data obtained
  • The ability to select optimal treatment options based on the best evidence and available resources
  • Advanced skills in the proficient and efficient execution of treatment techniques
  • The ability to develop and implement a clinical management plan relevant to the patient’s problems and goals
  • An awareness of the paramount importance of patient safety at all times
  • Enhanced appreciation of the health team’s approach to the management of neuro-musculoskeletal disorders
  • An appreciation of the limitations of sports and musculoskeletal physiotherapy
  • High skill level of documentation appropriate to the patient and the clinical setting
Assessment:
  • Two Clinical Examinations - 2 hours total (70%) at end of semester 2
  • Continuous supervisor clinical assessment based on performance criteria (30%) throughout semester 2. Students must gain a pass in the end of semester clinical examination in order to pass the subject.
