Clinical Skills 1

This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2012:

In Department of Paediatrics or Royal Children's Hospital, Parkville

FRACP lectures (on website- http://www.rch.org.au/jms/edu.cfm?doc_id=7704), and bedside teaching by Univerity of Melbourne academic staff.

Semester of offer: semester 1 (year 1)

80% attendance

The focus of clinical skills 1 is for students to be familiar with a broad knowledge of clinical paediatrics and basic and clinical sciences. The areas of communication, decision making, preventive medicine, ethical skills and the use of information systems (such as evidence clinical practice) will be highlighted through departmental lectures and tutorials.

Upon completion clinical skills 1, students should be familiar with the following

a) Knowledge:

Clinical knowledge-

• Knowledge of the basic and clinical sciences

Ethical practice-

In all clinical practice with children, the principles of-

• Providing best possible care: knowing limitations, keeping up to date.
• Not doing harm: treatment, confidentiality and communication, respecting personal and cultural differences, research and trials, consent.

Health systems information and information technology-

• Have knowledge about how to use information technology to access key information, clinical practice guidelines and evidence based medicine.

Semester 2: End year written exam 70% (3 hours), end year oral exam 30% (30 minutes). Pass/fail hurdle 80% attendance

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

Students will be able to demonstrate the application of clinical knowledge to the care of paediatric patients with a broad range of common and important medical and surgical conditions.

Ethical skills-

• Students will be able to demonstrate the application of ethical knowledge in their communication and attitudes towards children and their families.

• Students will be able to use information technology to access key information, clinical practice guidelines and evidence based medicine.
