Course Overview: The Master of Applied Linguistics provides specialist training and a professional qualification for graduates who are working or seek to work in the fields of TESOL, second language and teaching and learning, professional communication, second languages and other areas of applied linguistics. This program may also be taken for general interest. High-achieving students who complete the Minor Thesis elective may qualify for entry to Master of Arts by Research (MA), or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Objectives:

Student who complete the Master of Applied Linguistics should:

  • Acquire advanced understanding of concepts, current issues and research methods in the core areas of applied linguistics
  • Complete a focused piece of research if undertaking the Minor Thesis elective
  • Gain specialist knowledge and research techniques in their chosen Specialisation

Entry Requirements:

Minimum entry requirements

  • A four-year honours degree or postgraduate diploma in an appropriate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B (70%), or equivalent OR
  • A three-year undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline with a grade average of at least H2B (70%) and at least two years of documented relevant professional or work experience OR
  • An undergraduate degree and graduate certificate in an appropriate discipline and at least two years of documented relevant professional or work experience

Referee reports and employers' references may be required to assess the applicant's eligibility. Examples of relevant professional training or experience include (but are not limited to): teaching English or a language other than English, journalism, editing, writing, interpreting or translation, speech synthesis, designing natural language interfaces for computers, and speech pathology.
