Italian Past and Present

2.5 contact hours/week, 6 additional hours/week. Total of 8.5 hours per week.

Usually completion of 25 point of second year Italian. European studies students wishing to enrol in this subject would normally have completed 25 points of European studies at second/third year.

Formerly available as 116-074/362. Students who have completed 116-074 or 116-362 or Italian Past and Present at fourth year level (116-462) are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

The subject is designed to introduce students to a particular theme, issue, movement in the cultural and/or literary development and history of Italy. Topics will vary according to current research and teaching interests of academic staff. They may include a study of aspects of early modern and contemporary Italy, individual texts studied in their historical and cultural contexts using a range of approaches and methodologies.

• have acquired a good understanding of key historical and cultural issues in Italy.
• be able to apply various methodologies to their object of study.

A 2000-word essay 50%, a 10-minute class paper in Italian 25% and a 1-hour test 25%.

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

• Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
• All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
