Students will further develop their communicative abilities in Italian and their understanding of Italian culture by engaging with authentic texts, written, spoken and audiovisual. A range of media and activities will be used to explore key themes in modern Italian society. The acquisition of structures such as the subjunctive and the passive will significantly extend students’ ability to understand and discuss information and views in Italian in both spoken and written form.

Students who complete this subject will:

• have further developed their knowledge and understanding of the Italian language
• increase their understanding of contemporary Italian culture and society
• have improved their capacity to comprehend and to communicate in oral and written form in Italian across an increasing range of topics and settings
• be familiar with an increasing range of texts, written, spoken and audiovisual, in Italian

• Three take-home assignments (totalling 1200 words) in weeks 3, 6 and 10 [30%]
• Attendance and participation in class throughout semester [5%]
• 2 hour written test mid-semester [20%]
• 20 minute oral test, including 5 minute critical reflection on subject content and learning outcomes a the end of semester [15%]
• 2 hour written exam during the examination period [30%]

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

• Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
• All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
