This subject covers management of information technology projects and leading project teams and associated change management roles, tasks and processes. Topics include the project life cycle, project tasks and deliverables, defining a project charter from a business case, project scheduling, critical path analysis, resource levelling, risk management, quality assurance, testing and project delivery including post implementation reviews. The limits of projects as change agents will also be covered.

Upon completion of this subject, students should be able to:

• design software life-cycle processes and team structures based on the characteristics of individual projects;
• develop detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets, estimate project resources, allocate/coordinate resources, and describe interface with management;
• apply tools and techniques of project planning and management, including the use of project management software;
• design and apply quality assurance activities for the variety of artifacts produced during a project life-cycle;
• identify, evaluate, and control risks associated with projects;
• describe the human and organizational implications of change and explain the organizational change process and the limitations of projects and change agents;
• describe ways of overcoming resistance and handling politics.

Evaluation of project management processes and team structures in a case study of 1000 words (10%).
Cost and risk assessment for a case study of 1000 words (10%).
Group assignment extending a project management case study to include risk, quality, and change management (30%).
2-hour written examination during the Examination period (50%).
