Students will further develop their ability to read, discuss and write in Indonesian about social, political, cultural issues in Indonesia and beyond. Gender and class issues will be investigated through the reading and discussion of a novel and a variety of research papers. Students will write critical essays on these issues and present them in standard academic Indonesian.

On completion of the subject, students should:
• have read and discussed an Indonesian novel and a variety of research papers with a special emphasis on gender and class issues;
• be able to present summaries, commentaries and analyses of the prescribed readings in Indonesian;
• be able to use Indonesian to lead and participate in discussions on major social, cultural and political issues;
• conduct a mini research and present the result in standard academic Indonesian both in oral and written forms;
• have a broad understanding of socio-cultural and political issues affecting Indonesia today.

A 1000 word essay 20% (due early semester), a 20 minutes class presentation 20% (due mid semester), an in-class test 20% (due late semester), a 1500 word essay 30% (due during the examination period) and continuous class participation 10%.

Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
