This subject focuses on advanced modern literary texts, including study of contemporary Hebrew writers in prose and poetry, modern conversational idiom, and newspaper and academic articles. At the completion of this subject, students should have read, and have acquired an understanding of, selected advanced scientific and academic articles and essays.

• have acquired a knowledge of advanced literary texts in Hebrew.
• have further developed their reading skills and understanding of advanced scientific and academic articles and essays, enriching their knowledge of the modern idiom written and spoken in Israel today.

Written essays totalling 2000 words (to be completed throughout semester), 40%, a ten-minute oral exam 10% (due in examination period) and a 2-hour written examination 50% (during the examination period).

Hurdle requirement: class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 75% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

This subject is only available at first year level for students enrolled in the post-intermediate language stream. Students enrolled in the beginners stream or intermediate stream should enrol at seocnd or third year level.
