Subject Overview: Central to the quality of a university’s teaching and academic programs is the management and leadership of teaching and learning. Staff with oversight and coordination responsibility at the level of department, school or faculty play a particularly critical role. Heads of departments and other senior colleagues typically have overall responsibility for quality assurance of subjects and programs of study, for the management of staff and staffing, and for planning the academic direction of their departments.

The complex and changing nature of higher education presents challenges for academic leaders. In this subject, participants engage with the current higher education debates and issues relevant to leadership of university teaching. The subject is designed for staff with current leadership roles, with the assignment task an opportunity to develop an actual teaching and learning management plan.

Objectives: At the completion of this subject, participants should have developed:
  • Familiarity with the key considerations for effective leadership of university teaching;
  • Strategies for the management of teaching staff and staffing, including familiarity with the options for the professional development of teaching staff;
  • Skills in preparing teaching and learning management plans for academic units; and
  • Detailed knowledge of the policy context for university teaching in Australia, including current policy debates and issues.
Assessment: A portfolio documenting key insights from participation in higher education research and/or policy seminars (1,000 words equivalent, due end semester) (hurdle requirement).
A teaching and learning management plan for a University department, school or unit (4000 words, due end of semester) (100%).
