All students completing either DEVT90011 Minor Thesis - Development Studies or DEVT40008 Development Studies Thesis must complete this subject.

Students enrolling in this course must have completed a Bachelor of Arts degree or equivalent.

This subject involves a critical assessment of the literature of a research area in development studies, chosen by the student in consultation with their supervisor (supervision to be arranged by the subject coordinator if student is not completing the thesis). The area of review will be determined during regular meetings and discussions between the student and supervisor. Regular meetings will be held to discuss the development of academic arguments in the review. Preparation of the review will include an extensive literature search by the student on the defined topic and critical appraisal of drafts by the supervisor prior to final submission of the review.

Students who successfully complete this subject should

• possess library research skills.
• develop analytical skills.
• acquire training for writing academic papers.
• appreciate theoretical perspectives in development.

A written review essay of 5000 words (100%) due during the examination period.

Assessment that is submitted after the due date and up to 10 working days late without an approved extension will be marked on a pass/fail basis only. Assessment that is submitted later than 10 working days will not be accepted or marked. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Texts will be determined in consultation with the supervisor.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

This subject is compulsory for all students who intend to enrol in DEVT90011 Minor Thesis in the 200 and 150 point Master of Development Studies coursework program (097AB). This subject is core for students who are enrolled in BA Honours (Development Studies) or the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Develoment Studies).
