Subject Overview:

Students in this subject will inquire into a wide range of traditional and contemporary stylistic practices in poetry and poetics. Students will analyse and present discussions on a variety of poetic texts and recent works on poetics, before applying central poetic styles in their own writing. The subject will also involve intensive workshopping of students' own poetry with a focus on extending poetic technique and developing and articulating a personal poetic.
Objectives:

Students who complete this subject will be able to:

  • relate their creative work to historical developments in the writing and production of poetry;
  • devise, draft and develop a writing project with an introduction relating their work to theoretical and historical reading;
  • demonstrate a wide and close reading of a variety of poetic texts with an emphasis on contemporary poetry;
  • relate their creative work to issues raised in linguistic, critical, poetic and theoretical texts of commentary.
Assessment: Written work equivalent to 4000 words consisting of a 30 minute class presentation, scheduled during the semester, and participation in workshops/tutorials 10%; a draft folio (100 lines) due mid-semester 10%; a final poetry folio (240 lines) due at the end of the semester 70% and Poetics Blueprint of 1000 words 10% due at the end of the semester. This subject has a minimum hurdle requirement of 80% attendance and regular participation in tutorials. Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Notes: Students who have completed 760-330 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. This subject is available to Bachelor of Arts (Continuing) and Bachelor of Creative Arts students and may be credited towards a major in Creative Writing in either course.
