Subject Overview:

This intensively taught subject builds on the student's existing conservation knowledge and applies this to the specialised field of photographic materials conservation. Students will learn to identify deterioration mechanisms and their causes and to and determine, apply and adapt a range of standard and advanced conservation interventions.
Objectives:

Students completing the subject should

  • develop specialist skills in the conservation of photographs and related materials
  • develop understanding of the range of deterioration processes that are found in photographic materials
  • be able to identify the causes and apply a range of specialist conservation treatments to photographic material
  • develop the ability to present their proposed treatment approaches in written and oral format, to a professional standard.
Assessment:

Class paper 1000 words 20% (due during intensive subject delivery)Conservation treatment 1000 words 30% (practical treatment 15% report 15%. due at end of intensive subject delivery)Technical essay 3000 words 50% (due Friday, week 6 of second semester)
