Prerequisites:

Admission to the postgraduate diploma in arts (Cultural Studies) or fourth year honours in Cultural Studies. Students who have completed the New Generation BA and admitted to honours in Cinema & Cultural Studies or Screen and Cultural Studies will enrol in SCRN40014 Screen and Cultural Studies Thesis

Corequisites:

For students undertaking honours in cultural studies: MULT50001 Research Principles and Practices must be taken concurrently with the first semester of thesis enrolment.

Subject Overview:

Topics selected in consultation with the coordinator. Enrolment in the thesis is across two consecutive semesters and students must enrol in the subject in each semester to ensure they are meeting the full 37.5 point requirement for the year-long subject.

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject will:

  • have developed their skills in the forms of scholarly and critical analysis and inquiry appropriate to cultural studies;
  • have bought an independent research project from inception and development to completion;
  • have learnt how to develop their research ideas and improve their writing skills under supervision; and
  • have significantly enhanced their understanding of a specific area of or methodology in cultural studies.
Assessment:

A thesis of 12 000 words written over two consecutive semesters 100% (due at the end of the second semester of enrolment).

Students who successfully complete this subject will:

  • test and develop new research methods in relation to ongoing debates;
  • enhance drafting and writing skills, in both a critical and creative manner; and
