Prerequisites:

Completion of 50 Computing and Information Systems points at study level
6 or 9 (excluding COMP90007 Internet Technologies, COMP90038 Algorithms and Complexity, COMP90041 Programming and Software Development and SINF90001 Database Systems and Information Modelling) with an average mark of at least 70.

Students must obtain approval from the Subject Coordinator prior to enrolment.

Subject Overview:

Topics covered include: Research methodology, literature search, and scientific writing.

Objectives:

The purpose of this subject is to allow students to get some research experience by studying a selected topic in detail under the supervision of a member of academic staff. The subject will provide research training and skills in problem analysis, design and development of complex software systems.

Assessment:
  • Assessment will be based on a completed research report of 8,000 - 10,000 words (90%)
  • And a 20 minute presentation of the work or demonstration of a working system (10%), including answering audience questions.
  • The research report will present an introduction to the field of research and the topic addressed, explain the work undertaken in this project, relate the work to previous work in the field, and explain the significance of the results
  • The report will be due in the second week of the examination period, and the presentation will be given in the week between the end of the teaching period and the beginning of examinations.
