An understanding of landscape plants, urban ecology and vegetation systems in an urban planning and design context.

This subject will discuss how urban landscapes are managed. Students will study policy, planning and process issues; landscape and park typology and classification, community consultation; structures, systems, classifications and contractual relationships in urban landscapes; landscape documentation, project planning and implementation; management of urban vegetation; sustainability concepts and benchmarks and case-studies/examples of urban landscape management practice.

• Describe policy and planning issues in urban landscapes;
• Describe urban park and public landscape types and classifications;
• Outline processes and provide examples of community consultation in landscape decision-making;
• Discuss management structures, systems and reporting in urban landscapes;
• Describe employment and contractual relationships in urban landscape management;
• Evaluate the design and function of an urban park;
• Describe the planning, implementation and documentation required for landscape projects;
• Describe the management of urban vegetation;
• Discuss the use of sustainability concepts and benchmarks in urban landscape management.

• Critical thinking and assessment task (paper review) (equivalent to 1000 words) Pre-workshop assessment task - 20%
• Landscape Management case study (equivalent to 2000 words) 2 weeks post-workshop - 30%
• Landscape Management case study presentation (15 minutes duration) During workshop - 10%
• Urban Park evaluation project (equivalent to 3000 words) 4 weeks post workshop - 40%

• Source, interpret and apply written information from a range of resources to describe issues pertinent to urban landscape management;
• Use scientific and technical literature in the discussion and evaluation of issues in urban landscape management;
• Develop investigative and analytical skills through study of urban park planning and design.
