Overview: The Honours program at the General Practice and Primary Care Academic Centre will provide the student with the skills to conduct human research in the primary care setting. Primary health care research focuses on the provision of primary, comprehensive and continuing care. The research focus of the Centre is on quality and safety in primary health care, models of primary care and clinical research in primary care. The social model of health, the doctor patient relationship and the primary care team are all embedded firmly within this work. Honours students will have the opportunity to join one of the current research groups within the Academic centre.
Objectives: Honours students who graduate from the General Practice and Primary Care Academic Centre will be able to:
  • Demonstrate expertise in formulating primary care research questions;
  • Demonstrate a respect for ethical values in primary care research;
  • Apply critical and analytical skills and methods to the identification and resolution of problems within the complex primary care context;
  • Demonstrate research skills in methods and analysis used in primary care research;
  • Be proficient in the acquisition, processing and interpretation of research data, in both quantitative and qualitative methods relevant to the primary care setting;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the issues involved in translating clinical research results to the primary care setting.
The opportunity to specialise provides a strong foundation for the future direction of Honours graduates, whether as a means of progressing to higher degree research at the Masters or PhD level, or improving the scope of employment options and professional advancement.
