Education

Education is offered as a major field of study in the Master of Environment degree.

Education is one of the most important tools at our disposal to promote a sustainable society. The Education major focuses on improving educational programs, materials and strategies to drive ecological justice and social change.

Train people to become agents of change within their organizations, communities and institutions. Create multidisciplinary learning environments and motivate change.

Using emerging, critical, place-based educational theories, we work across traditional discipline boundaries. Understandings of historical, philosophical, socio-cultural, and psychological influences on environmental decision making are developed. We also study models of social transformation, community organisation, project management and conflict resolution, working collaboratively to create effective communication.

Integrate the use of multidimensional and multifaceted tools such as qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, impact assessment, monitoring, biostatistics and epidemiological analysis, in practices such as environmental science, public health, environmental planning and environmental engineering.

Students can expect to find employment in positions related to education, such as environmental training officer positions in corporations, government agencies, in consulting companies, in teaching and in development agencies.

Students who complete the Master of Environment will have:
• An advanced understanding of environmental issues
• Advanced skills and techniques applicable to changing and managing the environment
• An ability to evaluate and synthesise research and professional literature in the chosen stream or focus of study
• An advanced understanding of the international context and sensitivities of environmental assessment

The graduate attributes for the Master of Environment are:
• Expertise in multidisciplinary understanding, analysis and research with an environmental focus
• Collaborative approaches to environmental problem solving
• Capacity to engage in critical social and sustainability questions

The Master of Environment generic skills are:
• Multidisciplinary and trans-disciplinary knowledge and research of environmental relevance
• Collaborative environmental management skills
• Capacity for independent learning across discipline boundaries

Students will be required to complete three core subjects and undertake electives to make up the balance of the award. The selection of electives is made in consultation with the Education major coordinator.
