Subject Overview:	This subject focuses primarily on the history of the African American Jazz tradition. It also has a practical component where students are expected to demonstrate various skills on their instrument and show an understanding of relevant concepts pertaining to the performance of African ÂAmerican Jazz. The practical aspect of this subject will happen within the small ensemble.
Objectives:	On completion of this subject students should have acquired an ability to understand and perform a select body of wellknown works taken from the African-American jazz idiom; the ability to grasp current musical languages used in the idiom and apply them practically; a reasonable knowledge of the relevant recordings available; the skills to discern between the various genres which purport to come under the banner of jazz.
Assessment:	Continuous: Preparation and commitment as demonstrated by performance tasks and/or a regularly updated journal of activities embracing all areas studied (50%) - Hurdle requirement 80% attendance. Formal: One performance of approximately 15 minutes duration.
