Subject Overview:	This subject focusses entirely on a study of the musical product of this country, its musical languages, identity, influences and composers. Seminars will involve listening and analysing Australian music. It will also place Australian music in historical social and cultural context.
Objectives:	On completion of this subject students should have the ability to discuss Australian music with musicians and the broader community (in Australia and overseas) with knowledge and authority; promote the Australian art music product by placing it in an international context; foster confidently the performance of contemporary Australian music; promote greater understanding and knowledge of the large cohort of Australian women composers.
Assessment:	Preparation and commitment as demonstrated by performance tasks and/or a regularly updated journal of activities embracing all areas studied (50%) - Hurdle requirement of 80% attendance. A written research paper of approximately 1500 words or equivalent project as negotiated between the lecturer and student (50%).

Generic Skills:	Upon completion of this subject students should be able to: • Exhibit extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of their discipline including relevant professional knowledge, skills, discipline and ethics as they relate to the practising musician • Demonstrate an open and independent attitude towards contemporary cultural developments • Demonstrate a flexible and innovative approach to the challenges for the professional musician in the 21st century • Critically and creatively engage with topics of cultural significance across the broader community • Work at various levels, both individually and as a team member, in a wide variety of musical environments • Understand and appreciate how the arts connect with the broader society and culture • Be prepared to undertake postgraduate study.
