Time Commitment: | Contact Hours: 140 hours of face to face contact during four weeks of intensive classes. Subject Overview: | Six Sigma procedures involve the rigorous analyses of business improvement opportunities and their investigation, followed by specific organisational interventions and initiatives. Six Sigma is a body of knowledge that is founded on the fields of statistics, process control and the psychology of organisational change and human resource management, with important applications to organisational development. Six Sigma represents an holistic methodology that is well researched and proven to be effective in combining these base disciplines into applicable methods within organisations. |

Objectives: | Students who successfully complete this subject will: Understand the technical content of Generic Six Sigma (Black Belt) theory and practice and its relationship to broader social questions and to organisational outcomes; Appreciate how to create and acquire knowledge within their discipline; Be familiar with methods of applying statistical methods supporting Six Sigma in practical settings; Realise how the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge within the Six Sigma discipline are intimately related; Be able to articulate their knowledge in an appropriate form, including formulation of performance metrics associated with Six Sigma business improvement and control. Be capable of independent critical thought concerning the change management techniques of Six Sigma; Exhibit analytic and problem-solving skills, particularly in statistical analysis and project management capabilities; Have specific knowledge of the Six Sigma philosophies and methods of organizational improvement including particularly: 1. Data collection and analysis 2. Project control 3. Process and project management 4. Applied statistical and other methods as applied to business improvement methods. 5. Project implementation and leadership principles of Six sigma 6. Business improvement opportunity identification 7. Performance measurement 8. Planning and executing significant improvement processes |
Assessment: | One Major Written Project Report – The project will involve development and/or application of aspects of six sigma philosophy, methods and techniques. A comprehensive Six Sigma project document or investigation of an initiative inside an organization that the student has access to. This means identifying an opportunity for improvement and applying some of the core Six Sigma processes and tools to it. The report should provide a statement of the organisational context, the specific problem to be addressed and focus on the application of the processes and tools to address the problem, including any data collection as needed. Project report is to be 10,000 words (100%). |
