Time Commitment: Contact Hours: 1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1.5 hour seminar per week
Total Time Commitment: 2.5 contact hours/week, 6 additional hours/week. Total of 8.5 hours per week.
Prerequisites: Admission to the postgraduate diploma or fourth-year honours in Italian.

Non Allowed Subjects: Formerly available as 116-088 and 116-478 The Sicilian Connection. Students who have completed 116-088 or 116-478 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. Students who wish to take this subject but who have previously completed Italian Special Subject A or B should contact the coordinator.

Subject Overview:

This subject is designed to explore in depth significant literary and/or visual and written texts, and may include the study of particular genres, authors, critical methodologies, literary and cultural schools or movements, cultural and/or literary developments. Topics will vary according to current research and teaching interests of academic staff and various approaches and methodologies will be proposed.
Objectives:
  • have acquired an understanding of an aspect of Italian culture (literature, cinema or other developments).
  • have acquired the necessary techniques to analyse the material presented in the subject.
  • be able to discuss the topics in Italian.
Assessment:

A 15-minute oral presentation subsequently written up 20% (due during the semester), one research essay of 3000 words 40% (due at the end of the semester), and a 1.5-hour final test 40% (at the end of the semester).

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

  • Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
  • All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.

Generic Skills: Students will acquire the following generic skills:

  • communicating knowledge intelligibly and economically: through essay and assignment writing, tutorial discussion and class presentations.
  • public speaking and confidence in self-expression: through tutorial participation and class presentations.
