Subject Overview:

This subject provides students with a practical investigation of professional and community provision of cultural performance and artistic product for children’s and adolescents’ learning in the age of the ‘digital native’.
Students will be asked to incorporate practical and theoretical study of a specific arts discipline (drama,dance, music or visual art) into a contemporary cultural context for a specific youth audience.
The workshop and seminar program provides students with the opportunity to explore arts disciplines through practice and relevant informing theory.

Objectives: Students will:
  • learn to communicate through the symbol systems of their chosen artform;
  • develop a set of performance/presentation skills related to artistic practice;
  • understand theories of contemporary cultural and artistic production relevant to youth culture;
  • develop and refine cultural production related to digital media;
  • practise skills of critical reflection and critique.
Assessment: There will be two items of assessment

Item 1: Practical arts based presentation for a specific youth audience. 50% Equivalent to 2000 words. Due- End of semester

Item 2: Theoretical critique: reflective practice informed by relevant theory. 50% 2000 words. Due: First Draft Week 7; final draft – End of Semester.
